Why Does Yoga Make People Feel So Good?

It’s pretty common knowledge that exercise makes you feel good. When you move your body, your brain releases feel good hormones that affect your mood and your mental state.  At Mind to Body yoga studio in Mississauga, we love hearing our clients share their commitment to a healthy lifestyle and how they keep their bodies moving and staying active.  And while we have nothing against running, spinning or other types of exercise, we’re happy to share with you that yoga triumphs over the rest when it comes to making you feel good.

How Yoga Is Different

Let’s start by recognizing how many different types of yoga there are.  The yoga classes offered at our Mississauga studio range from gentle yoga, to hot yoga to core power yoga.  No matter what your interest and ability level is, there will be a class on our schedule that appeals to you.  This means that just about everyone can experience the feel good benefits that yoga offers.

In addition to releasing serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and other feel good hormones, yoga also:

  • Changes your brain – Higher gamma-amino butyric (GABA) levels are associated with lower levels of depression and anxiety. Studies have shown that the brain’s GABA levels spike after just a single hour of yoga. Impressively, just a single yoga class can start changing your brain chemistry and improve your mood.
  • Gets you to breathe – Every yoga class in our Mississauga studio incorporates elements of focusing on the breath to either invigorate your movements or to help you relax. The ability to be aware of and regulate your breathing is the key in lowering the stress, and being present in the moment–both of which increase feelings of happiness. Breathing exercises on their own are helpful, but breathing exercises paired with the movements of yoga increase feelings of happiness exponentially.
  • Focuses on your posture – You’ve probably never thought about it before, but your posture is related to your mood. In fact, changing your posture can change your mood. Yoga of all types encourages participants to lengthen their spine and sit up straight. These changes in posture help fortify the brain-body connection and as a result, the brain receives more positive messages that help people feel good.
  • Stretches & aligns your body – Other forms of exercise will certainly involve your muscles being stretched but not with a deliberate focus. The poses in yoga are designed to help stretch, strengthen, and align the body. Yoga movements’ aid in pain relief and prevention can help you move easier in everyday life.
